QUOTE OF THE YEAR

"When I take action
I'm not going to fire
a $2 million missile
at a $10 empty tent
and hit a camel in
the butt."

--George W. Bush.

BLUEGRASS MUSIC ALONG WITH FORDS, CHEVROLETS, DODGES, TEXAS BAR-B-QUE, AND CRAZY WATER, CAN CLAIM TO BE CREATED RIGHT HERE IN THE GOOD OLE USA. NAMES SUCH AS MONROE, FLATT, SCRUGGS, MARTIN AND STANLEY STAND OUT AS ORIGINATORS OF THE MUSIC THAT WE NOW CALL BLUEGRASS. MONROE HAD THE VISION AND THE YOUNGER ONES HAD THE WILL AND TALENT TO MAKE THE VISION WORK.

SOME OF THE GREATEST PICKERS ALIVE SIT ON THE BACK PORCHES OF OLD HOUSES IN ALABAMA, TENNESSEE, VIRGINIA, THE CAROLINAS, ARKANSAS, TEXAS, AND A MYRAID OF OTHER STATES WHERE CIRCUMSTANCES HAVE MADE LIFE TOUGH BUT REWARDING. LEANING BACK IN A CANE BOTTOM CHAIR PICKING A FIVE DIGIT SERIAL NUMBERED MARTIN AND ACCOMPANIED BY AN OLD SEARS FIDDLE, THESE MUSICIANS PICK THE TRUE MUSIC OF THE SOUL. MOST OF THEM WILL NEVER PICK FOR MORE THAN A HALF DOZEN PEOPLE AT A TIME, BUT THEY ENJOY THEIR MUSIC AS MUCH AS THOSE WHO ATTEND CARNEGIE HALL.

VISIT THESE PEOPLE SOMETIME AND ENJOY THE SIMPLE PLEASURE OF PICKING JUST ONE MORE.

BLUEGRASS LOST A GREAT PICKER DEC. 31 1999. ED SHELTON BANJOIST SUPREME PASSED AWAY AT HIS HOME IN MOFFAT TX.

Roger Starnes has been chosen to be the banjoist for LEON VALLEY BLUEGRASS. He has been an admirer and student of this group for many years and will do a first class job.

EARTHLY SORROW AND HEAVENLY JOY IS IN ORDER. ERNEST "HOSS" KING WENT TO BE WITH THE LORD AUG 16, 2001. HOSS WAS NOT ONLY A GREAT MUSICIAN BUT WAS ALSO A FINE CHRISTIAN GENTLEMAN. WITH SYMPATHY WE SHARE IN HIS FAMILY'S GRIEF. WE ALSO SHARE IN THE JOY THAT COMES FROM KNOWING THAT HOSS IS WITH THE LORD.

BLUEGRASS MUSIC IS THE MUSIC OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, AND FOR THE PEOPLE. SINCE I AM A PEOPLE, I CLAIM THE INALIENABLE RIGHT TO MAKE IT MY MUSIC. I CLAIM THE RIGHT TO COPY, PIRATE, STEAL, AND BY ANY OTHER DEVIOUS MEANS AT HAND, MAKE ANY SONG, TUNE, OR PERFORMANCE MY OWN.

I FURTHER FREELY ADMIT THAT I DON'T GIVE A RAP WHAT ANYONE THINKS OF MY MORAL TURPITUDE OR CHARACTER FLAWS WHEN I AM CAUGHT PIRATING OTHER PEOPLES MUSIC. THE CREATOR DID NOT SEE FIT TO ENDOW ME WITH ANY MEASURE OF TALENT OR CREATIVITY THEREFORE I MUST STOOP TO NEW LOWS IN MY QUEST FOR MASTERY IN MY MUSIC.

I FURTHER WISH TO STATE THAT IF YOU DON'T WANT ME TO PIRATE, STEAL, OR COPY YOUR BEST SONGS THEN DO NOT DO THEM IN MY PRESENCE.

WHY DO GALAXIES SHOW AS A SPIRAL WHEN VIEWED THRU A TELESCOPE?

Now what must happen given the passage of time?

I have picked up some new friends as a result of this page. I see that this is the way to communicate our common goal of promoting bluegrass music to the world. I am now acquainted with a fine Scottish fellow named BENNY BOUGH. I know he must be a great fellow because he picks banjo. Only people of great integrity, uprightness in thought, and taste for the finer things of life pick banjo.

integrity, ability, and brilliance of a leader."
